Strength Training Prevents Osteoporosis (and Can Reverse It, Too)

If you’re in your late 40s or early 50s, you’re in the critical window where bone density starts declining (especially if you’re perimenopausal or post-menopausal). This isn’t something that happens overnight, and it’s not something you’ll necessarily feel until it’s already a problem.

The reality: About 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, and women—particularly white and Asian women past menopause, who also have a family history of osteoporosis—are at highest risk. Throughout your life, your bones are constantly breaking down and rebuilding. But as you age, the rebuilding slows down, and bones become weak and brittle.

Why it matters now:fall or other injury that would have been minor annoyance in your 30s can cause hip, wrist, or spine fractures in your 60s and beyond. Severe cases can lead to a hunched spine (kyphosis) that eventually compresses the chest cavity and makes breathing difficult.

Hips Don't Lie: Strength Training Is Preventative Medicine

Research shows that strength training increases bone density through two mechanisms:

  1. Mechanical stress: When you perform exercises like leg press or chest press, your bones temporarily bend slightly under the load. Your body perceives this as weakness and responds by depositing more calcium to strengthen the bones.
  2. Muscle pull: When muscles contract forcefully, they pull on tendons, which pull on bones. Your body responds by depositing calcium at those attachment points.

 

These mechanisms are in action whether you’re 25 or 65.

Strength training can help younger women prevent osteoporosis. In one study, a total of 70 women between the ages of 18 and 26 trained three times per week for five months.

At the end of the five months, bone density increased in the thigh, forearm, and lower leg—even though only half of the body was exercised. Despite only training one arm and one leg, bone density still improved in parts of the untrained leg. The workout stimulus had a ripple effect that carried over to untrained areas.

Strength training can also help recover bone density lost to osteoporosis.

In a study of women ages 65-75, those who strength trained three times per week for a year increased bone density in their hips and lower back. The control group who didn’t train? They lost bone density.

And as in the previously mentioned study, the researchers found that some bone density improvements happened in areas that weren’t directly trained. It’s also worth noting that the strength training group had zero injuries across 2,500-plus training sessions.

Right now, in your late 40s and early 50s, you’re not just preventing future osteoporosis—you’re actively building bone density that will protect you for decades.
