Ask most people over 40 what they fear most about aging, and they’ll likely share concerns about cancer, osteoporosis, or falls. But dig a little deeper, and a more unsettling fear emerges: cognitive decline.

What the Research Says about the Connection Between Strength Training and Cognitive Function

When researchers at the University of British Columbia studied cognitive decline in women averaging 70 years old, they made a surprising discovery. Over the course of a year, they compared three groups:

  • Women who strength trained once per week
  • Women who strength trained twice per week
  • A control group doing balance exercises and light movements

The results? Cognitive performance improved by 11-13% in the strength training groups—and declined slightly in the control group.

In another study, researchers worked with women who already had mild cognitive impairment—meaning they were showing early warning signs of dementia. After six months of twice-weekly strength training, not only did their cognitive test scores improve, but MRI scans showed functional changes in three areas of their brains.

In other words, strength training didn’t just slow cognitive decline. It triggered measurable improvements in brain function—changes visible on brain scans—in people already experiencing cognitive issues.

Why Strength Training Works When "Brain Training" Doesn't

A 2017 study put strength training head-to-head against “brain training” (puzzles, Sudoku, and cognitive games everyone assumes can sharpen mental ability).

Three groups of adults 55 and older participated:

  • Strength training group
  • Computer-based brain training group
  • Control group doing stretching

After six months, strength training was the most effective intervention across all major areas—including improvements in memory and reductions in Alzheimer’s disease risk scores.

Brain training came in second. Strength training won.

Why? Because your brain doesn’t exist in isolation. It’s part of your body, and what’s good for your muscles, bones, and cardiovascular system is also good for your neurons.

How Resistance Workouts Strengthen Your Brain

When you engage in high-intensity strength training, several powerful processes happen simultaneously.

1. BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) increases. This protein supports the growth of new neurons and protects existing ones. Higher BDNF levels are associated with better memory, learning, and protection against neurodegenerative diseases.

2. Blood flow to the brain improves. Your brain requires about 20% of your body’s oxygen supply. Strength training enhances vascular function, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to your brain tissue.
