Symptoms are like infants. They’re a cry for help from your cells—even if they can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong.
“I went to five different doctors. ‘Your labs are all within normal range.’ The last one told me I needed to see a psychiatrist. And I was devastated—because this isn’t normal. It’s not something you can keep living with.” — Nichole “Coco” Wolf, FNP, Coco Functional Wellness
This episode introduces Nichole “Coco” Wolf—a board-certified family nurse practitioner, FastFit member, and the founder of Coco Functional Wellness in Austin, Texas. She’s been a nurse for 26 years. And 15 years ago, after her second child, her body fell apart.
She went to five doctors. Every one of them told her the labs were within normal range. The last one told her to see a psychiatrist. Nichole was devastated. She knew something was wrong—she’d been in tune with her body for decades, trained in medicine, athletic her entire life. A compound pharmacist friend pointed her to functional medicine. And with each practitioner she saw, another piece of her life came back. The root cause? Her progesterone was completely gone. It showed up on blood work as “barely there”—but within the range of Western medicine norms. Nobody caught it.
That experience became the catalyst for her own practice. Coco Functional Wellness takes a different approach: two-hour initial visits, comprehensive lab panels every three months, and a lens that looks at inflammation, hormones, gut health, nutrition, sleep, and stress as interconnected systems—not isolated problems. Nichole runs fractionated estrogen panels, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, inflammatory markers like homocysteine, CRP, and uric acid, and tracks calcium levels as a proxy for chronic cortisol elevation pulling calcium out of bone.
She’s also a FastFit member who trains twice a week for 20 minutes—and credits the workout with completely changing her physique. For her patients, especially women in midlife, strength training is where she starts. Every push and resist builds osteoblasts and stimulates bone remodeling—critical when estrogen is depleting.
This is the first of several episodes with Nichole. Future conversations will go deeper into inflammation, gut health, and the practical steps of getting started with functional medicine.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Nichole’s story: five doctors, “normal” labs, and a psychiatrist referral before functional medicine found the answer
- What functional medicine actually is—and why it focuses on prevention and root cause instead of waiting for disease
- Why “symptoms are like infants”—a cry for help from your cells that requires investigation, not dismissal
- The comprehensive testing Nichole runs: hormones, inflammatory markers, fractionated estrogen, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies, and calcium as a cortisol proxy
- Why overtraining creates more inflammation—and how 20-minute sessions twice a week provide the right amount of stress with proper recovery
- The real cost of functional medicine vs. years of ineffective traditional visits, supplements, and biohacks
- Coming next: deeper dives into inflammation, gut health, and practical steps for getting started
